These days, when we have accepted the limitation of our movements and a withdrawal from public space to a greater or lesser extent, many of us are questioning the concept of freedom.
For me, it has made me reflect on a concept that has been much debated throughout history by all philosophers, great and small:
Am I being free right now?
This is also an issue that coaches work on: when we raise the victim-responsible distinction, we are talking about the exercise of our freedom, an exercise that is born in our thoughts and translated into our actions.
This is the unresolved issue. My decisions are conscious, what is not so conscious is the engine that drives them.
What is the driving force behind my actions?
- to what extent have I built myself freely?
- have I chosen to be who I am being?
- can it not be me?
The brain, contemporary neurobiologists tell us, “is an open self-organising system”. And Conte-Spoville reminds us: “I am only on the condition, paradoxical of course, that I can not be what I am and be what I am not, on the condition that I choose myself absolutely».
A choice, a possibility
Freedom is the possibility of choice, and choice is both the supreme act and the tragedy of life, since in each choice all other possibilities are discarded. However, since it is a matter of choice, it is always better to choose those options that will enable you to make the greatest number of possible choices. In short, choose that which opens you up to others, not that which closes you in on yourself.
