A practical review of the ICF competency update: the keys at EEC Alumni

ICF competency update

At the last open session of EEC Alumni, We have focused on an issue that is already impacting conversations, evaluations and mentoring processes: the update of the ICF competency model.

The session was facilitated by Ruth Gavilán, regular moderator of Sessions Observed and Analysed, with a clear objective: to bring down to earth what this update means in the coach's daily practice.

Beyond the technical changes, the conversation left a clear message: ICF reinforces focus on coach as an instrument of coaching. It's not just about “getting the session right”, it's about taking care with intention. how we are in it: presence, conscience, ethics and coherence.

Key ideas on the ICF Competence Update

  • Coach development is seen in a more holistic way: not only training, but also personal development and continuous learning spaces such as supervision.
  • Welfare matters (and is made explicit): sustaining emotional, physical and mental balance is part of the professional standard.
  • More awareness of bias and influence: the focus was on recognising how our judgements, stories and patterns can creep into the session.
  • AI and technology on the radar: addressed the impact of the use of AI tools and the need to reinforce ethical and confidentiality criteria.
  • Contributing without “leading”: One of the most discussed points was how to share observations or resources without losing the spirit of coaching: autonomy, responsibility and client choice.

The session closed with very concrete questions on how these nuances are observed in practice on the ICF competency update, and with an idea that sums up well the spirit of the meeting: the quality of coaching does not depend on the tools alone; it depends above all on the quality of the coach in the conversation
