All coaching conversations take place within an emotional context. Emotions are not a secondary element of the process: they are information, energy, and a readiness for action.

From neuroscience, we know that emotion, thought, and behaviour are deeply connected. Before we decide, interpret, or act, our nervous system is already evaluating what's happening and preparing a response. That's why, in coaching, learning to listen to emotions—both our own and the coachee's—enhances the quality of presence, the depth of conversation, and the possibility of change.

In a coaching relationship, both the coachee's and the coach's emotions come into play. Therefore, it's crucial to ask ourselves:

  • From what emotion do I coach?
  • Emotions that foster trust, openness, and learning include:* **Curiosity** * **Enthusiasm** * **Trust** * **Respect** * **Empathy** * **Vulnerability** * **Optimism** * **Calm** * **Safety**
  • How do I identify, legitimise and support the emotional movements of the coachee?
  • How can I facilitate emotional changes that open up new possibilities for action?

We will explore the fundamental role of emotions in the coaching process and work on some tools to recognise them, understand them, and put them to use for a more conscious, effective, and transformative coaching relationship.

An invitation to continue refining our gaze as coaches and expand our capacity to accompany conversations that generate real learning.
