The gratitude of memory: a reflection on the importance of gratitude

21 March 2023

"The appreciation of memory" was the third meeting with which the Escuela Europea de Coaching is celebrating its 20th anniversary. An online event that took place on 20 March as part of the 20 Years Windows Cycle, led by the directors of EEC Catalonia, Blanca Huarte-Mendicoa and Joan Díaz, who reflected on the importance of gratitude in our lives.

From explanation to reflection to exercise.

The coaches started by explaining two types of gratitude and how they translate into the ability to recognise all the opportunities we have to be grateful throughout the day, even for the simplest things, such as the breakfast we have in the morning. They also mentioned unconditional gratitude, which refers to the ability to be grateful even if nothing exceptional has happened in our lives.

The challenge, Blanca Huarte-Mendicoa explained, would be to cultivate gratitude as a state of mind and even "I would say that the most difficult thing for us has to do with being grateful for even the most difficult moments. That would really be the mastery of gratitude.

The power of gratitude

Gratitude can also be an antidote to our limiting beliefs, as Joan Diaz clarified, either when we believe that there is not enough to go around, that we are not enough ourselves or when we approach life from scarcity.

"Gratitude, therefore, is a gateway to happiness and joy," continued EEC Catalonia director and MCC coach Joan Díaz.

As always, experiential

The online event "The gratitude of memory" allowed attendees not only to reflect and inquire about the importance of gratitude in our lives, but also to exercise it. An invitation and a dynamic resulted in feedbacks like these: "thanks to my children, to life, to the pain it teaches me, to being able to see and smell the sea, to company, to myself for smiling, to God, to you, to exercise, to old age...".
