Silvia Guarnieri: «Coaching is a profession where we sell values»

20 May 2014

Taking advantage of Silvia Guarnieri's stay in Mexico City, Luis Fernando González chatted with the expert and recorded her lengthy interview in the Coaching blog in Mexico.

A conversation in which the founding partner of the EEC and ICF MCC coach talks about her passion for coaching, how she came to this profession, and also about the trends and paths that coaching will take in the future, in her opinion. "Coaching is a profession where we sell values. If what you sell is not coherent with who you are or who you are being, it turns out to be very difficult for them to buy from you," she assures.

Silvia Guarnieri, born in Buenos Aires, reveals to Luis Fernando González that she discovered coaching through a book by Humberto Maturana and from what her husband, who was already studying coaching, told her.

The expert and co-author of the book ‘No es lo mismo’, speaking, for example, about the distinctions of coaching, the object of study in said book. "When we talk about a distinction, we talk about common words, words we use habitually where coaches give them another meaning, with the intention that this new meaning gives people another capacity for action.".

Silvia Guarnieri explains the present of coaching, which is focusing on promoting values and the dissemination of conscious leadership. "A leader is not a person who has people at their service, but rather the opposite; a leader is someone who is at the service of the people they lead and watches over and looks to give their team what they are missing to achieve the desired outcome.".

Further quotes from Silvia Guarnieri taken from the interview:

  • "Suffering is a private conversation; it's a choice you have, to suffer or not to suffer.
  • "Let's think big and think about legacy.
  • "The fact that I'm constantly training coaches gives me a great opportunity to keep learning a great deal, more than I would have imagined.
  • "The great value of coaching, or a coaching process, comes into play when the coach can hold two things for the client simultaneously: action and a visible outcome consistent with that reflection.
  • "We need to pay less attention to ourselves, we deceive ourselves when alone.
  • "If I had to choose a magical thought now, it would be that [coaching] was more accessible to everyone.
