Language tools to generate awareness and change in the client at EEC Alumni

3 November 2023

At the EEC Alumni talk, titled «Tools at the Service of the Coaching Session: Artisans of Words» Montse Sans, an expert in coaching and in processes of transformation and change, addressed crucial topics related to the ontological coaching and provided attendees with a deep insight into the skills and tools essential in this field.

The presentation focused on the importance of establishing clear objectives in a coaching session and how these objectives can effectively guide the conversation towards achieving specific results.

Montse Sans highlighted that the role of a coach is not to solve the client's problems, but rather to question their interpretations and beliefs with the aim of helping the client change their perspective and act accordingly.

Furthermore, the need to move from reflection to action in coaching was emphasised, fostering a practical and results-oriented approach. The speaker stressed the importance of empathetic listening and the ability to ask powerful questions to deeply understand the client and facilitate their growth and development, the usefulness of distinctions, and of feedback.

«We say that distinctions give the coach a power to intervene that they didn't have before learning the distinctions. Any ordinary person hears a friend's story and, generally, if they don't have the power of distinctions and haven't studied the distinctions, if they haven't internalised them, they don't distinguish within the story itself,» explained the coaching expert.

Montse Sans also delved into the linguistic reconstruction of emotion and the interpretation of metaphors as key tools in the coaching process. The steps for the linguistic reconstruction of emotion were explained, which involves identifying assertions, judgments, and declarations in the client's discourse, which is fundamental for understanding and addressing emotions.

«Isn't mirror feedback ‘Can I give you feedback’? Yes, look, what I think is happening to you is that at the moment you're not realising that that's not mirror feedback, because that's a diagnosis. A diagnosis of what I see, which is neither good nor bad, but not part of mirror feedback,» the coach said at one point in the webinar attended by over fifty people.

This presentation also awarded 1 Continuing Coach Education (CCE) unit from the International Coach Federation (ICF), highlighting its relevance and quality in the field of ontological coaching.
