Learning from successes and mistakes from vulnerability, keys to being a mentor

12 February 2016

The first edition of the Mentor Programme of the Spanish-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, in which the Escuela Europea de Coaching participates, kicked off on Wednesday 10 February.

This kick-off consisted of an Awareness Day to explain to the professionals who take on the role of mentor what is expected of them and how they can help their mentee to achieve their objectives.

"We worked in a participatory way on getting to know each other, the expectations with which they arrive and the commitments that both mentor and mentee acquire in this programme", reveals Luis Miró, EEC coach and trainer of this Mentor Programme, about last Wednesday's event. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to go over the protocols and deliverables of the process together, as well as the planned agenda until the end of the programme in October.

The main objective of the process is, according to Luis Miró, "that everyone wins, with experiences and learning that will help them, not only for their current challenges, but also for their future development, both professionally and personally".

In this sense, the expert comments, "one of the critical success factors of this type of programme is precisely the creation of a context of trust between the mentor, the person who provides his or her experience, and the mentee, the person who agrees to develop his or her full potential. And this will be our main objective, to facilitate and dynamise the relationship between the two so that it is beneficial for everyone".

Furthermore, in order for the project to reach a successful conclusion, Miró continues, "over the course of these months we will be interspersing training sessions to develop conversational skills and future project projection. We want to do this by clearly connecting with the experiences and difficulties that the participants are experiencing and from the vulnerability of having participated in other processes as a mentor, with successes and mistakes from which we have been able to learn something".

The Escuela Europea de Coaching, which carries out these programmes in entities and companies, will coordinate this programme in which professional-mentors, whose companies are partners of the Spanish-Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Madrid, will meet with young people to boost their professional careers.
