Silvia Guarnieri, founding partner and academic director of EEC, publishes "Emotions and bonds: from blindness to emotional wellbeing", her first book on emotional management. MCC Coach and director of the Emotional Awareness Programme at EEC, she shares all her knowledge and experience, acquired over years of working with people and their emotional world.
What has writing this book been useful for you, and what did you enjoy most about the process?
The possibility of organising ideas and experience. When I think back on what I have experienced, on the people who have so kindly accepted to be my coachees, together with the teachers, my colleagues at the EEC, the students who have passed through our classrooms and who have accompanied us for almost 20 years, I am invaded by a deep gratitude, which comes from feeling that deep personal learning has always come from connecting with others.
What learnings from the book relate most to the way you experience coaching?
If we start from the idea that what happens in the outside world and what happens in my inner world are two separate processes, two different domains, then we know that two siblings, who participate in the same experience, live it in their inner selves in different ways. Each one gets emotional in their own way and they act according to that emotion, intimately linked to the thoughts that each one may have, which is why the coach's work does not judge what happens to us, or how we feel, or think. We know that each individual is a world of possibilities, of different interpretations. The coach assists the client to find another way of seeing things, and usually that new way culminates in love and acceptance of oneself and others.
Any moments of insight during your reading?
Yes, reading many times what I wrote. During the corrections, I thought that surely many people would not share my way of seeing or thinking. The subject of emotions is still a world to be explored and what is written today will surely be obsolete tomorrow. However, I was thrilled with the feeling that I felt reflected in what I wrote. It is what I think and feel at the moment of writing and for sure, if I read it again tomorrow, I would correct millions of things that I would not agree with myself.
What tools from the book can be used in a coaching process?
All. It is a book to read as a family and, at the same time, very practical for those who are interested in improving their professional practice.
At what point in the learning process as coaches might it be advisable to read it?
It depends on how much you are interested in the subject of emotions. In my opinion, there is no "when", there is a "who", who opens his or her heart to a magical world, full of surprises, that invites us to question what we have learned, to generate critical thinking about emotions. My greatest gift in this book would be to be able to debate with whoever is interested, to continue contributing value to an increasingly complex world.
