As every Wednesday in 2023, Escuela Europea de Coaching is holding an open call to celebrate and share its 20th anniversary. In September, the webinar "The mind of the learner" took place, given by the coach, facilitator and speaker Sandra Díaz.
A talk focused on the importance of adopting a learning mindset to catalyse growth in all spheres of life. "When a team cannot recognise its mistakes, it is stuck, unable to learn and move forward. The learning mentality is precisely the opposite: it is an openness to recognise what we don't know and what we have done wrong, so that we can correct it and learn from it," he explained during the meeting.
One of the most inspiring moments
Coach Sandra Díaz shared the story of Natalie Portman. The actress, despite her countless achievements, faced impostor syndrome when she got into Harvard.. The expert summarised how Natalie found a solution in adopting a learner's mindset. "Instead of focusing on what she didn't know or how she compared to others, she focused on what she could learn and how she could grow. And this is something we can all do, regardless of where we are in our career."
Sandra also pointed out the importance of organisations fostering this mindset, stressing that by valuing diversity and viewing mistakes as learning opportunities, companies can strengthen their adaptability and resilience.
Echoing psychologist Carol Dweck, Sandra set out a clear distinction between fixed and growth mindsets. While the former can limit development, the latter drives evolution through constant effort and training.
The webinar culminated with a tribute to the figure of the master, using the iconic Yoda from Star Wars as an exemplary representation. Sandra urged participants to face obstacles by connecting with what we already know, with challenge, risk and error and from what one can still learn from new relationships and situations.
