We've slept more hours, we've slowed down, and we've even enjoyed ourselves, yet the feeling of exhaustion persists. Why does this happen?

The answer may lie in an idea that is receiving increasing attention from psychology and neuroscience: Not all tiredness can be solved by sleeping. Rest is a much broader concept and there are different recovery needs depending on the type of wear and tear we experience.

Although the classification of the «seven types of rest,» popularised by American physician Saundra Dalton-Smith, is not a scientifically validated model as such, it is useful for understanding that wellbeing depends on recovering different physical, mental, emotional, and social resources. Furthermore, many of these types of rest are supported by independent research on stress, attention, emotional regulation, or psychological recovery.

1. Physical rest: to recover the body

It is the best-known type of rest. It includes getting enough sleep, but also taking breaks, stretching, engaging in moderate physical activity, or simply allowing the body to recover.

Getting a good night's sleep improves memory, emotional regulation and the functioning of the immune system. However, physical rest does not always eliminate fatigue if the source of tiredness is mental or emotional.

Ask yourself:

Am I getting enough sleep?

Do I wake up feeling recovered?

2. Mental rest: giving the brain a break

We live constantly subjected to a flow of information, interruptions and decisions. Even if we're not making a physical effort, the brain can end up exhausted.

Mental rest involves temporarily reducing cognitive load: taking breaks, avoiding multitasking, disconnecting from notifications, or simply allowing moments without constant stimuli.

Research shows that breaks during the workday improve concentration, reduce mental fatigue, and promote better performance.

3. Emotional rest: stop pretending

Many people spend a large part of their day managing what they show to others: they smile when they are tired, appear calm when they feel anxious, or avoid expressing their discomfort.

This effort comes at a psychological cost.

Emotional rest involves having spaces where we can express how we feel without feeling judged and without having to maintain a certain image.

Healthy emotional regulation isn't about hiding emotions, but about recognising and managing them in an adaptive way.

4. Social rest: choosing who we recharge our energy with

Not all relationships affect us in the same way. Some people help us regain energy; others leave us emotionally drained.

Social rest doesn't mean isolating yourself, but rather seeking a balance between relationships that nurture our well-being and those that require significant emotional effort.

The quality of personal relationships is one of the most robust predictors of long-term well-being and health.

5. Sensory rest: reducing overstimulation

Screens, notifications, noise, traffic, artificial lighting… Our brains rarely have moments of true sensory calm.

Reducing visual and auditory stimuli for a few minutes can help to restore attention and lessen feelings of being overwhelmed.

Sometimes it's enough to put your phone away, turn off the television, or take a walk in a peaceful environment.

6. Creative rest: getting inspired again

Creativity isn't just important for artists or designers. We also need it to solve problems, make decisions, or find new perspectives.

Creative rest involves exposing yourself to experiences that spark curiosity and inspiration: contemplating nature, visiting a museum, listening to music, or discovering new places.

Research shows that contact with natural environments aids attention recovery and stimulates creative thinking.

7. Spiritual rest: connecting with that which gives meaning

It doesn't have to be related to religion.

Spiritual rest refers to the need to connect with our values, our purpose, or that which we consider important in life.

Feeling that our actions have meaning is associated with higher levels of psychological well-being and resilience.

For some people this involves meditating; for others, it means engaging in charitable activities, spending time with family, or dedicating time to what they deem truly important.

What kind of rest do you really need?

When we think about rest, we often wonder how many hours we've slept. However, perhaps the more useful question is another: Which part of me is really tired?

Perhaps you need to get more sleep. Or perhaps you need to disconnect from your phone, spend time with people who make you feel good, express how you feel, or simply regain the ability to pay attention to the present moment.

Understanding that there are different types of rest helps us stop searching for a one-size-fits-all solution for all types of exhaustion.

Scientific references

American Psychological Association (2023). Stress in America.

Berto, R.
