What did the people in the photo have to do to complete the simple puzzle?\nCollaboration doesn\u2019t just happen by magic. And getting along isn\u2019t enough either. It\u2019s built with intention, practice, and the right conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back to the photo: these people had to communicate, move around, maybe pass pieces from one hand to another... <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at another example.\nImagine a team in a tech company that had to deliver a key proposal in two weeks. Each team member was highly competent\u2014top of their field. Everyone knew what they had to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But something failed, and they didn\u2019t meet the deadline.\n\nThey didn\u2019t share information in time. They didn\u2019t ask how others were doing. Each person stayed in their own lane, trusting the rest would \u201cdo their part.\u201d\nThe result: they delivered late, with mistakes, and the opportunity was lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What was missing? Collaboration.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaboration isn\u2019t just about dividing up tasks or being in the same Zoom meeting.\nAs Buddhists say, everything is connected, interrelated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"If you look deeply into a sheet of paper, you will see a cloud.<br>Without a cloud, there can be no paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without the cloud, there is no rain.<br>Without rain, the tree cannot grow.<br>Without the tree, there is no paper.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this quote, Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us that nothing exists in isolation. Neither do teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collaboration from a Coaching Perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the lens of executive coaching, we distinguish what collaboration is\u2014and what it isn\u2019t: Competing is not collaborating. Imposing is not collaborating. Controlling everything is not collaborating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because coaching is a practice, we know collaboration isn\u2019t a technique\u2014it\u2019s a way of being with others. It\u2019s not a personal trait; it\u2019s a shared practice that involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acknowledging my vulnerability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knowing how to ask for help<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letting go of control and trusting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listening with empathy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connecting to a shared purpose<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8 Tips to Improve Collaboration in a Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clarity of roles and responsibilities<br><\/strong>Each person needs to know what\u2019s expected of them\u2014and what they can expect from others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A clear and shared direction<br><\/strong>When there\u2019s a common purpose, decisions align more easily.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Explicit agreements about the how<br><\/strong>What do we allow and not allow in this team? How we work is just as important as what we do.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spaces to build trust<br><\/strong>Not everything is operational.
