We find ourselves daily in situations, both in our professional and personal lives, where life presents us with the dichotomy of answering with a Yes or No.

A yes or no to respond to a request, an offer, a claim, or even an attitude that may come from our bosses, colleagues, clients, suppliers, children, friends, parents, siblings, neighbours…

Ultimately, from people we meet along our life path.

On some occasions, we face them with a certain difficulty, which can generate internal tension when our mind speaks to us and questions us: Are you going to say yes, or are you going to say no?

Reservations of courage

It is here that we make way for the dilemma that we will only manage to resolve if we draw upon a dose of the available reserves of courage we possess.

Honesty can be understood as a quality inherent in human beings, consisting of acting in accordance with what one thinks and feels, meaning being in coherence, peace, and harmony with oneself, and also feeling the integration of mind and heart.

Being one and not two

From that perspective, when faced with a request, claim, and/or offer from someone in our circle, we say “yes” when deep down inside we hear a little voice telling us “say no”., We are being victims of our ego's manipulation.

In that instant, we fall out of coherence with ourselves, generating emotions that distance us from peace and emotional well-being. Only if I am aware of this can I freely and responsibly re-enter coherence and choose to say yes and/or no, if that is the answer I want to give.

Our conscience is our freedom

When our automatic mode, that is to say Yes, The act of saying "No" opens us up to an unknown world and pushes us to expand our comfort zone. A significant factor to consider is daring to say "No" in an environment where most would say "Yes." In these contexts, saying "No" can be a heavy burden on our body, mind, and soul.

One of our learnings is being able to say no without feeling guilty, while maintaining our affectionate bonds with those people to whom we say no.

For this to happen, we need to believe that it is as legitimate to say YES as it is to say NO. And from that belief, express what we think and feel, taking into account our needs and feelings, and those of others. Releasing the fear of being judged.

Saying yes when we mean no, or vice versa, saying no when we mean yes, can lead to personal dissatisfaction, undermine our self-esteem, and increase our unproductive stress levels. Therefore, It is important to develop the ability to express our choices honestly and transparently.

Staying in touch with our inner voice, strengthening assertiveness, and changing those societal beliefs that push us to see and understand the act of setting boundaries through the word “NO” as being tyrannical, insensitive, and arrogant.

It will be easier for us to say no if we think about the reasons for saying no and recognise our ability to express it without bothering others.

The act of considering "no" stems from our freedom, involving reflection and deliberation on the costs and benefits of such a refusal. For this to occur, we must have first contemplated "yes" as a possibility.

To declare a DISCLAIMER, partly from the premise of having considered the POSSIBILITY of a Yes, of having had the bravery and courage to imagine what would happen if I said yes.

Being true to what we think and feel makes us unique individuals and doesn't necessarily mean distancing ourselves from others.

Throughout our lives, we face "No's" and "Yeses," and they define us. By saying No, we establish limits, boundaries; by affirming, we show what truly matters to us. Saying no to something is saying yes to something else.

Our VALUES are implicit in each of our statements. For this reason, when our mind tells us no, and our heart yes, or saying yes with our head when our heart says no, some of our most essential values can come into conflict, generating a certain discomfort within our inner forum.

Why do we say yes when we mean no? What emotion powerfully drives the act of declaring a yes? It seems that the emotional root that mobilises and articulates the YES instead of the NO, is Fear.

We are driven by a mix of fears:

Afraid that if I say no, they'll get angry.

Fear of feeling guilty.

Fear of appearing or being selfish.

Fear of offending the other person.

Fear of disappointing the other's expectations.

Fear of rejection.

Fear of not being accepted, of not being loved.

Fear of making the wrong choice.

Do you identify with any of them?

I invite you to consider a reflection, taken from the book “Knowing How to Say No” by Francesc Torralba, a doctor of philosophy:

I say yes, when I really mean yesss.

I say no when I really mean no.

What and why do I say yes, if I mean no?

Why and for what purpose would I say no if I want to say yes?

To be transparent and honest in communication with yourself and with others, you need:

* **Self-awareness:** Understanding your own thoughts, feelings, values, and biases.
* **Authenticity:** Being genuine and true to yourself.
* **Courage:** The willingness to express your true thoughts and feelings, even when it's difficult or uncomfortable.
* **Empathy:** The ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
* **Clarity:** Expressing yourself in a way that is easy to understand.
* **Integrity:** Aligning your words with your actions.
* **Openness:** A willingness to listen, receive feedback, and consider different perspectives.
* **Vulnerability:** The courage to show your true self, including your imperfections.
* **Respect:** Valuing yourself and others, and treating each other with consideration.

“The free man is the rebellious man, and what characterises him is the capacity to say no, to oppose what is expected of him, to make his life a personal project, and to have the audacity to defend his own uniqueness and not disintegrate into the social Whole,” Albert Camus.

Sometimes being transparent and honest with oneself becomes a real and challenging endeavour.
